BIDMC Researchers Launch Clinical Study of AI-Powered Patient History-Taking in the Emergency Department

Dr. Gabriel (Gabe) Erion Barner and Dr. Adrian Haimovich launch an innovative research initiative evaluating the use of conversational artificial intelligence in emergency care.

The study, MINERVA-HX, will assess whether an AI-powered voice and text assistant can safely and accurately collect patient medical histories, generate clinically useful summaries, and identify potentially urgent symptoms. Researchers will compare the AI system's assessments with those of emergency physicians while evaluating patient experience and clinical feasibility.

Led by Principal Investigator Dr. Adrian Haimovich at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the study represents an important step toward understanding how patient-facing AI tools could support emergency department workflows and clinical decision-making.
