Team presents MINERVA – Real Time Clinical Voice Agent

Steven Pepe, BS, Research Analyst for the Division of Artificial Intelligence, Department of Emergency Medicine, BIDMC presented MINERVA – Real Time Clinical Voice Agent at the recent BIDMC Research Retreat held in September 2026.

MINERVA is a speech-to-speech AI system that talks with older adults in the ED to learn what matters most to them, then drafts a summary that patients review, edit, and approve before it enters the EHR. The work is a collaboration with Sydney Mulqueen, MD, Gabriel Erion-Barner, MD, PhD, and Adrian Haimovich, MD, PhD, and is supported by the National Institute on Aging and a BIDMC Age Friendly Pilot Award.

ABSTRACT: MINERVA is being used to elicit what matters most to older adults in the emergency department. Across 141 enrolled participants, 86.5% completed a voice-based interaction with MINERVA, and 84.4% had a patient-approved summary entered into the EHR.
